My name is Tynan Smysniuk and I am part owner and head instructor at Goal Tec goalie shoppe in Sherwood Park, Alberta. I began taking lessons from Roydon Gunn when he first opened Goal Tec in Saskatoon. I was 16 years old and he trained me to go on and play Midget AAA with the Saskatoon Blazers and Junior “A” with the Lebret Eagles. After Junior hockey, I came back to Saskatoon to go to the University of Saskatchewan and instruct at Goal Tec. I graduated the University of Saskatchewan in 2003 with a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology. Through this degree I have learned how to teach motor skill development which I apply to instructing goaltenders. After graduating from the U of S, I stayed in Saskatoon to manage Goal Tec. Now I feel that it is time to move on and challenge myself and to continue to pass my knowledge on to aspiring goaltenders. I want to expand Goal Tec and pass our Goaltending Techniques on to all goaltenders.

I have been teaching goaltending since 1998 in Saskatoon. This is the tenth year of operation for Goal Tec Saskatoon, where I also managed for one year. I taught at the Goal Tec Summer School for six years of which it has been in operation for 16 years.

Playing goal at such high levels has allowed myself to have many experiences in the net. I have played with many great players and goaltenders such as Jaret Stoll of the Edmonton Oilers, Robyn Regehr of the Calgary Flames, and Billy Thompson of the Ottawa Senators farm team Binghamton, Michael Garnett of the Atlanta Thrashers farm team Chicago Wolves, and Corey Sarich of the Stanley Cup Champion Tampa Bay Lightning. I have also played with and against many more great players. I know how tough it is to make the NHL, but I also know what a great experience it is just to play hockey.

I currently play hockey in the Battle River Hockey League for the Viking Gas Kings. It was a pleasure to play for the team and meet the people around the town. It was a great pleasure to meet Daryll Sutter this year as well. I still enjoy playing at a competitive level. You can check the league website at www.brhl.ca.
